Breeding and raising quality rabbits

               GIANT CHINCHILLAS

The Giant Chinchilla was developed in Missouri in 1921. The breed was produced by an individual who bought some of the first chinchilla rabbits to arrive in the United States. This breeder knew that the Chinchilla rabbit would be very popular with the American fur industry, but he also knew that a larger rabbit would be more profitable. While other breeders developed the Chichillia into the larger American Chinchilla breed, the Missouri breeder had bigger ambitions and decided to create an even larger breed.  Using the basement of his house, the Chinchilla was crossed with numerous other breeds, including white New Zealands, white Flemish Giant and blue Americans. It took various crosses to ultimately produce the chinchilla color, and many of the pairings that intuitively seemed right, such as using the steel Giant Flemish and Champagne d'Argent, were unsuccessful. Progress toward larger size and good coloration continued. On Christmas morning, 1921, a Giant Chinchilla doe, whom the breeder considered ideal was born. He named her the "Million Dollar Princess," and she was shown for the first time in the fall of 1922.   A standard for the breed was proposed and recognized in by ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association) in?. The Giant Chinchilla is considered a "watch" breed by the ALBC( American Livestock Breeds Conservancy) because there are fewer than 200 annual registrations in the United States and an estimated global population of fewer than 2,000.
